What I wore: No time to fuss

Patterned knit dresses and low-heeled booties are turning out to be my fallback uniform this winter. My professional life has continued to grow even more busy and stressful, and I have little time (not to mention patience) for playing around in my closet.

The few times that I've worn wovens, jeans, or blouses with pencil skirts, I have physically felt fussy, itchy, and constricted (particularly up until recently, since I was wearing a wrist brace for weeks following a sprain) so for the most part I'm sticking to knits. I don't want anything physical that will add frustration to my day.

My hair grows quite quickly and during the snow/ice storm that we had a few weeks ago, I was driven batty by the long layers around my face getting incredibly unruly with the static buildup from wearing wool hats. So a couple weeks ago, I opted for a shorter and even choppier version of the cut I've been sporting since last summer. I'm also totally done with buying any constricting tights that tend to bunch up or roll down. Commando hose has been my saving grace - they have many patterns including a super cute large polka dot print, and they have a high, seamless waistband that actually stays put on me.
Second best are some fantastic high-quality mesh tights that I got years ago on sale at Anthropologie that are still going strong. I wish that I could remember the brand so that I could seek out more.

I like the ease and comfort of boots, but my tall boots are giving me the same constricting feeling that I get from wearing wovens these days - I can't slip in and out of them in a hurry - so I'm sticking to booties.

I'm very, very glad that I stocked up on a lot of colorful, patterned knit dresses over the past couple years because they are getting a LOT of play. Aside from the comfort factor, dresses are a no-brainer; I just pick out hose, shoes, and a necklace or scarf and I'm good to go.

I hope to one day be in a more restful place where I have a bit more creative energy and inspiration to devote to what I wear. In the meantime, though, I'm finding that Pinterest is a great way to collect my inspirations until I have time to experiment with putting them to action. I'm also VERY glad to have fallback options that make me feel stylish and put together most of the time.

#1: Sky blue patterned wrap dress from Banana Republic outlet; black lacy camisole and opaque hose; rhinestone snowflake brooch; black low-heeled Clarks booties.
#2-3: Burgundy striped Bailey 44 midi dress; brown opaque hose; burgundy low-heeled booties; cameo brooch; mock-antique pocketwatch necklace.

I always love your WIW's. Both of those dresses are amazing! I love the blue color of the first one, and of course the Bailey 44 is fab! I am in love with your watch necklace!! I love clocks anyway, and to have it on necklace is fantastic! Your haircut is great, too.

Thanks, Jem! I have been longing for a pocketwatch necklace for a while. I actually found this in an antique shop last weekend, despite its not being an actual antique, and snapped it up right away. I've seen many similar items on Etsy recently too.

Very nice, Kari! This is your signature look that you rock big time :)

I hope that you will soon be in a more restful place too. Good luck!

Kari, sorry about all the stress. On the positive side, it sounds like you've learned a huge amount about how to get yourself through the day feeling fab, and that can be really valuable in the long run. I've scrapped certain items realizing that I just can't be bothered with the way they make me feel when I'm not 100% confident already. It's a good litmus test for determining what's TRULY fab when the going gets tough.

Kari i LOVE Pinterest! Particularly all the amazing recipes and organization ideas. @_@

Both of these look great! Even if you don't have a lot of time to mess around with your closet it's great that you have your style figured out and these easy dresses to pull on that still keep you looking fabulous!

Well, if you've got a fall-back that looks this great on you, go with it. You look terrific, Kari.

You look gorgeous in these dress and booty combos Kari - I especially love you in that Bailey 44 dress. And for pocket watch necklace is divine!

You look absolutely fabulous! I'm so sorry to hear things ar still a PITA on the work front, but at least you've got your wardrobe sorted. FWIW, I think dresses and booties are one of THE most modern and put together looks about this season, and one I have not been able to master. I'm glad you can rock it for me. I love the sweet vintagae/antique details you add, and the personality that shines through. Here's hoping things on the job front start looking up real soon. :)

Well, Kari, if that's a uniform, it's a rockin' one! Good to see your posts again.

You look great, Kari. Both dresses are fab on you but I especially like the Bailey 44. Hoping life gets less stressful for you soon.

Kari you are looking lovely. I am totally with you re dressses. They are my fall back all seasons.. I love them and the your collection of dresses is beautiful. #1 is so gorgeous and I love the booties with it. Your B44 dress looks so good on you. I tried a version that is available here in Australia and it did NOTHING for me :(

It is so good to have a such a fab wardrobe that you can just choose something knowing you look fab, and that it works and not have to put too much energy into the process.

You are in my thoughts and trusting you get to that restful place.

Kari I love your new shorter hair. You have a great stylist.
Thanks for telling us how much you love the Commando tights as I've always wondered about them. You are so very feminine and very pretty. I love the added touch of a cameo and the antique watch necklace.
It's funny I was thinking recently that my tall boots are starting to feel a bit constricting. Maybe it is because spring is in the air.
Thanks for sharing these great pictures. You always look like a breath of fresh air.

    Oh. My. Sexiness!

I don't know what I love most --- either of your FAB dresses, the out-of-this-world watch or the pretty cameo brooch, the black & blue combo or the modern & vintage pairing... OR the fact that you have found the perfect practical formula to looking fab, and FAST!

Just wanted you to know you're an inspiration, Kari, and that you look fabulous.

Love the shorter hair. Isn't it great to have a fall back formula, which you can throw on without much thought and still look fab. Hope life settles down soon x

  • Zapotee replied 2 months ago

Beautiful as always. You have this combo down to perfection.

Hi Kari. I haven't seen you much and wasn't sure if it was because I haven't been around as much or if you weren't around much. I guess it was both. The beauty of understanding what works for you is that it is easier to change it up when life gets in the way of fashion.

I loved you in the more structured looks of pencils and tops but you really do rock the knit dress too. I hope things settle down soon.

  • nancylee replied 2 months ago

Wish I could look this good when I'm not even trying! :)

That Bailey dress is amazing on you, Kari. And thanks for the reminder of Pinterest. So far, I've avoided it for fear it will take away more of my increasingly dwindling (does that make sense?) time.

  • Ginny replied 2 months ago

Love these looks Kari!!! the B44 dress is fab on you!!! At least you look great while work is driving you nuts!!! Hope things settle soon!!

  • Queen Mum replied 2 months ago

And this is the power of great fitting, flattering clothing... they don't need alot of fuss. You look great in both of these!

  • krishnidoux replied 2 months ago

Both lovely and interesting dresses! The first one is for its magical colour on you. The second, for its structure and pattern. I really like the cameo detail. Will copy.
    Thanks for posting!
