Never say never, Kari: The Doc Martens episode

I really don't know what happened in this past year and a half, but my stylistic eye is a-changing. Items that I used to think were frumpy or clunky or just weird are suddenly, unexpectedly... attractive. It's not that the items themselves have changed, either - it's all me.

To name a few examples: Faux fur vests. Midi dresses. Sparkly embroidery. Flat oxfords - worn with a figure-hugging dress. Turtlenecks.

My only explanation is that it has got to be some kind of fashion karma getting me back for saying "Oh, I'd NEVER be able to wear that!"

The latest item to unexpectedly charm me into giving it a trial run at home? A pair of black, 20 eyelet Dr. Martens.

And this is coming from the girl who has historically not been a Docs fan - I like the boots on other people, but still I usually like to see something a bit streamlined, not so tough or edgy, not such a rugged, chunky sole.

But the Dr. Martens Leanne has a sleeker profile, more tapered, a thinner sole, and is a wedge. It's a bit more of a refined shoe, and I am smitten. It's a little higher than my "sweet spot" for heels, but feels lower than the 3.25" that is listed on the Zappos page for the shoe. I'd primarily see myself wearing these boots with dresses, or possibly over leggings once they have stretched a bit* (see below.)

The Leanne is a bit wider in the calf than the average Doc, meaning that the calf circumference is CLOSE to fitting - I can loosen the laces to adjust the fit, but the laces are a little shorter and the very upper part of the calf a little wider in the tongue than I'd like. But it's close enough to make my heart leap. They're incredibly comfortable. Also, they don't crumple in the ankle nearly as much as many of my other tall boots do.

No pictures of me trying them out yet, but I'll report back later.**

*Veteran Doc owners, what do you think - would it be worth visiting a cobbler to see if I can get them slightly stretched in the upper calf and/or tongue?

**Edited to add photos of me trying on the boots with a dress.

Oooh, those Leannes look divine! I too tried the 20-eye Docs but they were too clunky and masculine for me. But I'd wear those wedge boots for sure! Can't wait to see you in them.

    Mm, nice boots!

There's nothing weird about changes to your 'stylistic eye' (love that description). I think it's what keeps fashion interesting, and moving forward. It happens to me all the time. In fact, if I make a declaration that I simply cannot stand a certain look, it's a sure thing that in a year's time my eye will have adjusted to the look and I'll start to crave it. It's like Murphy's law.

Ooh, I like those! I never liked Doc Martins, either, but am really liking them right now. (Same with converse, it never occurred to me before to wear them). I would love to try some on! I can't wait to see a picture of yours on. I've never seen the wedge boots before, but they look great.

  • Makrame replied 4 months ago

Wow, these look great! The only thing that would give me pause is heel height but it sounds they are not uncomfortably high. They would look great with dresses.

  • rae replied 4 months ago

Love these! My Doc wedges are so oh so comfortable - I've seriously sprinted in them. I think it's worth looking into stretching if you love the look. :)

  • Joy replied 4 months ago

Wow! I can't wait to see you wearing these beauties with dresses.

  • Jem replied 4 months ago

    Those look amazing on!

  • RandomThoughts (Andrea) replied 4 months ago

Kari, I own the Leanne's in the tan (servo lux?) and they are wonderful! Very comfy, easy to wear and you can RUN in them. I say GO FOR IT!

I'll start a thread and can show you me wearing them at the Puyallup dog show this past Sunday.

Really nice boots Kari! I don't own Docs but I'm sure they could stretch them, it's a common thing to have done.

  • Kari replied 4 months ago

Yay! I'm glad this style direction doesn't seem to be quite so out-there as I first feared.

I pulled them out of the box, and B's reaction was "Those look like pirate boots." Boys!

So... as soon as I can confirm that the roads & my driveway are safely driveable, I'm off to the mall to do some exchanges/returns and to see if possibly Nordstom's shoe department would be able to stretch the Docs. Keeping my fingers crossed.

They look perfectly beautiful for your style!

  • replied 4 months ago

They look beautiful. But they look more like cool lace-up boots, then biker doc martens. The sole is not as chunky. They are a lot feminine! The perfect of Doc. Martens for your style!

  • Laura replied 4 months ago

They are so fun, Kari. And Docs are great in all sorts of weather. Is the wedge heel heavy?

  • Janet replied 4 months ago

Kari, I can relate! I never thought I'd wear Converses or Docs, especially at my age, but I now own two pairs of each! My eye has definitely adjusted and my style has changed -- I say go for what appeals to you. Those are fab looking boots, and they look to me like they'll work beautifully with your wardrobe and style, especially all your amazing dresses. :-)

  • Kappy replied 4 months ago

Oh, I really like those! Hope you get good news at the cobbler so you can keep them.

  • celia replied 4 months ago

Those docs look great. They have a sleek look and i can see you incorporate them in your wardrobe.
For what is worth pirate boots were not lace up, they were more over the knee foldable ones.At least captain hook ones....

  • kellygirl replied 4 months ago

They look awesome. I can't wait to see them in action : )

  • Angie replied 4 months ago

    They look nice!

Can we see them with a dress?

  • Isabel ( MA ) replied 4 months ago

Kari, I have had my eye on these for a couple of years....so you know I love them !!!!!!! I think that your style is still evolving and at your age, you are moving into a different stage. I am soooooo excited to watch you do this !

  • Amy replied 4 months ago

They look awesome. Yes, please, show us a picture of you wearing them with a dress.

  • Kari replied 4 months ago

Celia, I think you have a point. No self respecting pirate would wear laced boots anyway-that's just asking for wet feet!

  • Small But Mighty replied 4 months ago

    Awesome boots. Pictures, pictures, pictures!!!

  • Kari replied 4 months ago

Angie and Amy, I will try to take pics with a dress today. (last night I did not want to change back out of my pajamas!)

  • Transcona Shannon replied 4 months ago

These are gorgeous Kari - I can hardly wait to find out if they work for you and to see them styled.

  • DragonflyJane replied 4 months ago

I've been seriously eying these up myself - can't wait to see your pictures especially with a dress.

  • Vicki replied 4 months ago

I think they look great in the photos and I also agree that the wedge gives you the sleek look that is your preference while still adding the Doc flair. Plus, I think the wedge levels out the height concern issue and provides the comfort.

  • Kari replied 4 months ago

Jane-check out Andrea (randomthought)'s post if you haven't done so already to see hers in action-looks great!

  • Parsley replied 4 months ago

Kari, I have read that you can have a shoe repair shop add elastic goring at the top of your boots. You might ask about that. I was looking at a pair of mine that are made like that, and it doesn't look like it would be difficult to add.

  • DragonflyJane replied 4 months ago

Thanks Kari & OMG - have just checked out Andrea's photos & I'm sold, sold, sold!
    Roll on pay-day!

  • LoP replied 4 months ago

Really nice boots. Would love to see them on you.

  • Ginny replied 4 months ago

I like these, they are different then most docs I don't own a pair, but love how angie styles them, and these to.me have a little retro flair, a flair that you already pull off so well, these will work great for you.!!! excited for u, what do boys know anyways??? :-)

  • Kari replied 4 months ago

I think there's a chance he might think better of them when I'm trying them on with real clothes and not pajamas!

  • christyg replied 4 months ago

I think they are super fun! I am surprising myself by liking them (and even considering giving them a whirl myself!).
