Musing about style evolution

I've been giving a lot of thought to my present-day personal style, as well as where I see myself evolving in the coming year compared to what I used to wear. (Some of Angie's recent blog posts on describing your style persona and analyzing your favorite outfits have given me some great food for thought.)

Sometimes it's easier to identify where my style is going by pinpointing where I'm moving away from. I'm less inclined toward horizontal colorblocking - creating high color contrast between my chest and hips. I'm moving away from colorful solids and am more drawn toward pieces that create textural or visual patterns - ikat and animal prints, overlapping layers, stripes, or just combinations of visible layers (turtleneck + dress + scarf, or blouse + waistcoat + blazer.)

I am still in love with pencil skirts and probably always will be, but more and more I like wearing them as if they are dresses, as I've been lucky enough to find tops that match some of my bright, knitted seamed pencil skirts. I'm less wary of booties than I used to be - years ago I really only wore knee high boots or pumps, and now I'm wearing colorful short boots that contrast with the color on my legs. I'm also less hesitant about volume around my bust - lately I've become hooked on the idea of creating faux-infinity scarves by loosely wrapping and pinning my large, patterned wool scarves around my neck. I still heavily "bat for Team Dressy", but I'm moving into a less authoritative, buttoned down style - often literally, as I enjoy the contrast of an unbuttoned waistcoat over a midi dress.

My locks play into this vibe as well - I find that the longer my hair is between cuts, the more I try to experiment by stripping away some of the polish, the classic elements of my style. When my hair is short and choppy, it adds a bit of edge and playfulness, and I don't feel quite as conservative or staid. I'm also more likely to wear glasses, earrings, or pearls when my hair is short and piecey.

Looking through photos of what I have worn in the previous year, I think that the outfits or photos below are most representative of the direction that I see myself heading. But, as usual, I'm still trying to nail down the essence of what has shifted. (Aside from the obvious additions of a shorter 'do, new specs, and my dream handbag!)

Now, if you don't mind, help me verbalize what you see here. What words come to mind with this collection? And if you didn't know me at all, what kind of first impression would someone wearing one of these outfits give you?

The first two words for me are " funky, classic " ...which I am not sure even makes sense LOL. So now I am going to study the pictures and come up with something more thoughtful.

  • annagybe replied 4 months ago

I think your style is becoming refined Anthro-esque.

  • nicoleb replied 4 months ago

    Yeah! I agree with Anna!

  • Girl X replied 4 months ago

I see 'Modern Mad Men' - very feminine; retro silhouettes; trendy touches

  • Meredith1953 replied 4 months ago

    Funky, Ethnic Classic!

  • Jenava replied 4 months ago

I think you'r styl is volving from traditionally fminin to doing it in a sophisticatd way. Still th sam bombshlly silhoutt that works with your curvs so wll, but with th layring and prints/txturs ampd up it maks it lss traditional and mor modrn. 'xcus my lack of a crtain lttr...my kyboard is brokn. (-:

Jenava, that is hilarious! You can't even spell your own name, can you? You're doing pretty well without it, though. I hope it can be fixed easily.

    Sorry Kari, OK.

When I look at these pictures, I see fun/playful (because of the colors and risk taking), flirty/coquettish (because of that sassy posing and curve accentuation) , confident/strong (you look comfortable in your own skin and sure of your style).

So maybe Fierce Modern Bombshell. For the record, I LOVE your style! :)

  • taylor replied 4 months ago

Girl X nailed it for me "Modern Madmen"...more sophisticated than Bombshell, but just as fun!!

  • Amy replied 4 months ago

"Bombshell" has to play into your style description because you dress to flatter your gorgeous curves and you always have a bit of sophistication/elegance/polish to your look.

The strong colors and bold designs you favor make me think "confident," or, "fierce" in the way Christian Siriano would use the term.

With your desire to deconstruct some parts of your outfit, i.e. choppy, flirty hair and unbuttoned jackets--and even the adoption of pattern and texturs over smooth solids--you're starting to explore the RATE end of the style spectrum.

How does "RATE Bombshell" sound to you?

  • Transcona Shannon replied 4 months ago

Kari - the first impression that comes to me when I see these pictures is "fun, confident, stylish". I see someone who is sure of themselves and their individual style. You love colour and well fitting clothes. You're not afraid of being seen but you're not overdone. And there is a slight retro/1950's look to your style...how about Retro Bombshell?

  • Alicat replied 4 months ago

My reaction is similar to Shannon's. I thought "confident, outgoing, happy." Somebody I would want to know. Lighthearted Bombshell?

  • Angie replied 4 months ago

I LOVE what Girl X said: "Modern Mad Men"!

    - Playful Bombshell

    - LadyLike Anthro

  • Jjsloane replied 4 months ago

From these photos I see COlorful, COnfident and FUnky, REtro BOmbshell

How about COCOFUREBO? Sorry I live in a world of acronyms.

You look beautiful, modern, hip and fun.

  • elisabeth replied 4 months ago

Kari, I love each one of those outfits and you look beautiful in all of them! The words that come to mind are hip, arty, feminine and slightly retro. I love your glasses in picture 1, and you rock your waistcoat!

  • Jenava replied 4 months ago

Clair, If I didn't hav this computr st to rmmbr my usrnam I wouldn't vn b abl to log in! Althouegh I MIGHT b abl t copy/past that lttr if I had toeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee OMG, thr it is!!! It's working! Oh, crap, it's not.

  • Andrea B. replied 4 months ago

Kari, here's what comes to mind: Fresh, feminine, but funky and fun. A gorgeous woman who knows what she wants, dresses for comfort and style, and is confident and feels fab about herself. I love the way you mix pieces and add a dash of the unexpected. And your beautiful smile conveys it all

  • Suz replied 4 months ago

Kari, you look splendid. And the others have come up with some very clever acronyms and names. So it is left to me merely to say that in addition to being a feast for the eyes, this thread has been hilarious!

  • Scarlet replied 4 months ago

    Sophisticated eclectic classic bombshell

  • Shu replied 4 months ago

The word that jumps put at me most is FEMININE. I was thinking demure bombshell, but I think Angie's playful bombshell is right on the nose.

  • goldenpig replied 4 months ago

I love all the terms listed here! I agree with Angie's terms and I love "Modern Mad Men" too! I think you're definitely retro bombshell but you've got a fun 70's side too!

How about Sassy Bombshell? I like Playful Bombshell too. Something to give a nod to your colorful, daring, cheeky and fun personality.

  • Kari replied 4 months ago

Wow! Thank you all for chiming in - your descriptions are so helpful.

Perhaps the reason why I've been having trouble getting a handle on my new style identity is that I'm moving both towards more refinement and more playfulness, maybe even flirting with deconstruction or "RATE." (I wouldn't put "RATE" into the actual definition of my style persona, though - not yet. I still like to roughness to be polished and calculated, if that makes sense - for example, I still like clean lines, but I'm okay with raw edged garments (like the Bailey 44 dress.) I definitely think there is an increase to the sassy factor in my style, too. I'm not as fearful of being noticed or standing out due to my style as I used to be.

Anyway, I'm loving the language you've all provided me with. Thank you!

  • Mamapicklejuice replied 4 months ago

You seem very "His Girl Friday." Feisty bombshell. (I don't see you as rough-around-the-edges at all.)

  • Kari replied 4 months ago

    "Feisty" - I like it! ;)
